At the end of a fantastic year topped off with brilliant 30th anniversary celebrations, a new season of singing is upon us!
We saw the last season out in style with a wonderful send-off for our long-standing (literally!) Musical Director, Susan Wilkinson. Susan was involved with the choirs since their inception, and worked hard across many years to nurture young people’s voices and give them the confidence and skills to perform to a very high standard. Many choir members spanning the full 30 years convened at our anniversary concert on July 9th at Huddersfield’s Holy Trinity Church to showcase the skills, dedication and love for music and singing that began as a result of their involvement with the choirs. The concert was a triumph and served as a true illustration of Susan’s legacy. We cannot thank her enough for her hard work and dedication from her first day with the choirs to her last.
And so the Huddersfield Choral Youth Choirs enter unchartered waters and a new musical era, and we could not be happier to announce that, from September 2016, Alison North will be taking on the role of Musical Director! Alison is well known in the area primarily for her work with Lindley Junior School Choir, with whom she has enjoyed much success for a number of years, achieving many national awards in that time.
Although Alison is well versed in working with young voices, she is the first to admit that our older choir, the Youth Choir, will be a new adventure for her, and one she is particularly looking forward to. She has emphasised in particular how much she’d enjoy taking the Youth Choir to various competitions, both locally and nationally!
Alison has heard the Youth Choirs sing many times and has always enjoyed the wonderful sound our brilliant members produce. We too are excited about working with Alison and having lots of fun along the way!
We are very much looking forward to hitting the ground running when we return to rehearsals after the summer break. We will be hosting a Welcome Workshop on the first rehearsal back on the 7th September, and would love to see some new faces among our wonderful existing members to kick start preparations for our two concerts in December; our own Christmas concert and an invitation to sing again with senior choir, the Huddersfield Choral Society, at their ever-popular and fabulously festive carol concert.
There certainly are some changes and challenges ahead, but we are all looking forward to another wonderful season filled with music-making, teamwork, friendship and fun!
